Zirconia crown

Zirconia crown

Zirconium is the oldest and most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust, which has been used in the dental field. Among the ceramic materials available today, zirconium has excellent biological properties and is undoubtedly the best and most modern prosthetic material.

Zirconium oxide is increasingly replacing the metal structures of crowns and bridges. Used in jewellery as an imitation of diamond (the hardest substance in nature), has a similar durability, so it is extremely durable. Crystalline and milky zirconium oxide looks like a natural tooth, because like it, it transmits and reflects light.

Zirconia crowns are made entirely of monochromatic material, thanks to which their base is not visible in the gum tissue. They are also completely biocompatible with the human body, so there are no allergies. They can also be used when the pillar is not a natural tooth but an implant.

Currently, crowns are made with the use of a computer: CAD (computer aided design) and CAM (computer aided manufacture). In order to make a prosthetic model, an optical scanner is used. A ceramic crown is designed with the use of special software. The workmanship consists in milling zirconium oxide with the use of modern technologies, allowing for accuracy to several microns, which gives great precision of workmanship and adjustment to the patient’s teeth.

Sometimes it happens that the condition of a tooth does not allow to put on a zirconia crown. Dentition is always assessed by the dentist, who decides whether it is possible to use a zirconia crown for the patient. A contraindication for a zirconia crown is a small tooth residue over the gum (less than 2-3 mm). Also, if the teeth up to the gums have been damaged by caries, it is not recommended to make a zirconia crown. Such a crown can also be placed on an implant, if your own tooth has been completely lost.

Zirconia crowns are used in the case of discoloured, damaged or excessively occluded teeth. Compared to standard dental cavity treatment methods, this is still expensive, but the most effective method that fills the aesthetics and usefulness for the most demanding customers.
