Surgical tooth extraction

Surgical tooth extraction

When is there a need for a surgical tooth extraction?

Surgical tooth extraction is performed only when it is absolutely necessary. Such cases include:

– caries disease – the destruction of a tooth to the point where no surgery can save it,

– periodontal disease,

– detained teeth – detained teeth are teeth developed in their entirety, but not visible in the oral cavity. They should be removed because they can cause malocclusion and crooked teeth,

– no room for tooth growth,

– strong inflammation.

What is the procedure?

This procedure is often performed in the case of detained wisdom teeth, or “eights”. Indications for this procedure are also the roots of the teeth left in the bone, as well as all situations in which it is not possible to remove the tooth in a less invasive way.

Surgical tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia (less frequently under general anesthesia). The procedure involves cutting the gingival mucosa at the height of the removed tooth, and then separating the mucous membrane from the bone together with the periosteum. In this way, the doctor gets to the bone surrounding the tooth. Using special drills, the layer of bone surrounding the tooth is removed and the tooth is easy to extract from the surrounding bone. The wound after the procedure should be sewn up and properly equipped. Finally, it is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations during the postoperative period.

What happens after the procedure?

After the procedure of tooth extraction in the dentist’s office, the dentist hands over all the recommendations to the patient. Performing these recommendations is very important if you want to reduce the number of complications.

The patient should not eat or drink anything for two hours after the procedure. After further hours, dishes should be soft and cool. It is recommended to maintain proper oral hygiene. Intensive rinsing of the oral cavity is not recommended even for 3 days after the procedure. One day after the treatment

smoking should be stopped.
